MINUTES FOR JULY 23, 2018

BOARD OF CHEROKEE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

CHEROKEE COUNTY, KANSAS

CONVENE

Chairman Cory Moates called the regular session of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners (The Board), to order at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, July 23, 2018 in the Commission Room, #109 of the Cherokee County Courthouse located at 110 W Maple St, Columbus, Kansas.  Commissioner Neal Anderson opened the meeting with prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  Commissioners Cory Moates, Pat Collins, Neal Anderson, County Counselor Barbara Wright, and County Clerk Rodney Edmondson were present.

Members of the press present:  Larry Hiatt and Jordan Zabel

A motion was made by Commissioner Collins to approve the minutes of the July 16, 2018 BOCC meeting as written.  The motion was seconded by Commissioner Anderson.  The motion carried 3-0.

Louis Schreiner, County Lot Supervisor, appeared before the Board on county road business.

A motion was made by Commissioner Collins for an executive session for non-elected personnel benefits with the Board, Counselor Wright, Clerk Edmondson, Louis Schreiner, and Mike Barnett for a period of 15 minutes.  The motion was seconded by Commissioner Anderson.  The motion carried 3-0 at 9:14 a.m.

The meeting reconvened at 9:29 a.m.

Ron Atkinson, representing the Galena Elks Lodge, appeared before the Board.  He stated that they are wanting to get the Galena Elks Lodge off of the tax rolls.  They can’t give as much charity work as they would like by having to pay real estate property taxes.  He stated that they are a non-profit organization.  The Board had Counselor Wright take him to the County Appraiser to get an application for exemption.

A motion was made by Commissioner Moates for an attorney client executive session for contract purposes with the Board, Counselor Wright, and Clerk Edmondson for a period of 15 minutes.  The motion was seconded by Commissioner Anderson.  The motion carried 3-0 at 9:43 a.m.

The meeting reconvened at 9:58 a.m.

A motion was made by Commissioner Moates to accept the resignation of Kevin Cure as one of the contract attorneys to the District Court.  The motion was seconded by Commissioner Anderson.  The motion carried 3-0.

Commissioner Moates stated that they anticipate making an appointment to replace Mr. Cure next week.

At 10:10 a.m. the Board moved to the break room for a demonstration from Computer Information Concepts (C.I.C.).

The meeting resumed in the commissionroom at 11:20 a.m.

Commissioner Collins made a motion to adjourn until the next regular meeting set for Monday, July 30, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.  The motion was seconded by Commissioner Moates.  The motion carried 3-0 at 11:22 a.m.
